Born 1812. Died 1904 - Scottish writer and social reformer.

Studied medicine at Edinburgh, practised as surgeon in Leeds. Editor of the Leeds Times. Secretary of Southeastern Railway. Best known work Self-Help published in 1859. Wrote other improving works including Character (1871), Thrift (1875) and Duty (1880).
