Born on 13rd of October 1713
Died on 10th of August 1784 | Famous Events in 1784

Born 1713. Died 1784 - Scottish portrait painter.

Trained in Italy. Worked as a portrait painter in Edinburgh before moving to London in 1762. Appointed portrait painter to George III. Particularly skilled in his portraits of women notably that of his wife. Gave up painting around 1770 to follow a literary career.
