Although a successful Victorian novelist and short story writer, she is probably best known for her biography of Charlotte Bronte. Her first novel Mary Barton was published in 1848, and following works include Cranford (1853) North and South (1854) and Wives and Daughters (1865). Her friend Charles Dickens published her popular ghost stories in Household Words.
