1916 - 1990. Cricketer.

A Yorkshire player throughout his career. Made England debut in 1937, scored a century in his first test against Australia in 1938. Scored a world record 364 runs in the Oval test that year. Captained England in 23 tests. Regained the Ashes in the 1953 test series and retained them during the tour of 1954-55. Retired in 1956. Knighted in 1956.
