Naval lieutenant during WWII. Success in stage performances including The Way Things Go (1950) led to more cinema roles. Became one of most popular British film stars of 1950s. Films included Genevieve (1953), Doctor in the House (1954) and Reach for the Sky (1956). Television appearances included The Forsyte Saga (1967-68) and Father Brown (1974).
