Born 1923 - English astronomer, author and broadcaster.

Educated privately due to illness. Navigator in Bomber Command during WWII. Began popular television series The Sky at Night in 1957. Written more than 60 books including Guide to the Planets (1976), Guide to the Moon (1976) and The Wondering Astronomer (2000). Made Honorary Fellow of the Royal Society, knighted in 2001.
