Born 1915 - Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Died 1987 - British zoologist and Nobel Prize winner.

Studied zoology at Magdalen College, Oxford. Studied skin-grafting for burn victims during WWII. Investigated problems of tissue rejection in transplant victims. Shared Nobel Prize for physiology or medicine in 1960 for research into immunological tolerance. Elected FRS in 1949, knighted in 1965.
