Born 1874 - Paris, France. Died 1965 - British writer.

Qualified as surgeon at St Thomasís Hospital, London. Medical practice gave him material for first novel Liza of Lambeth (1897). Served with Red Cross in France then secret agent in Geneva and Russia. Experiences inspired works such as Ashenden (1928), East of Suez (1922) and Cakes and Ale (1930). Best known for his short stories. Also written essays on Chekhov, Henry James and Katherine Mansfield.
