Considered the best ballerina of her time, she was the star of the Royal Ballet Company from 1939. She was renowned for her portrayal of Aurora in Tchaikovsky’s Sleeping Beauty. Her greatest partnership was with Rudolf Nureyev, first appearing together in 1962 in Giselle, and lasting till her retirement in 1979. She was made a dame in 1954.
