Studied anthropology under Bronislaw Malinowski. First major publication was Political Systems of Highland Burma (1954). Interested in analysis of myth and ritual. Other publications included Genesis as Myth (1969), Rethinking Anthropology (1961) and Social Atthropology (1982).
