The son of a canon at Windsor Royal Chapel, Dick Sheppard worked with the poor before becoming an Anglican priest in 1908. During WWI he was briefly a chaplain in France before receiving the living of St Martin-in-the-Field, where he became well-known for his preaching, his fame furthered when in 1925 he gave the first service broadcast by the BBC. A noted pacifist, Sheppard’s reaction to a proposed charity ball on Armistice night in 1925 was instrumental in the way the occasion was and is marked nationally with solemnity.
