While serving as an army officer Savery turned his inventive mind to various mechanical devices, including a boat rowed by paddle wheels, a glass-polishing device, and most significantly what was the first steam engine that was employed (albeit with little success) commercially. He later cooperated with Newcomen on building a more effective and efficient steam engine
