Rous was prominent in the Puritan cause as a writer and a politician from the start of the 17th century until his death in 1659. He was MP for various Southwest constituencies from 1604, became Speaker during the Commonwealth, and in the same period was Provost of Eton. Elements of a version of the psalms produced by him remain in use in some corners of the Christian faith in Britain today.
