Laboratory research assistant before turning to acting. Made London stage debut in A Smashing Day (1966). Joined Royal Shakespeare Company in 1967. Starred in Gandhi (1982), won a Best Actor Academy Award. Later films included Schindler’s List (1993) and Death and the Maiden (1994).
