BOOK THAXTED HOTELS

Samuel Purchas
- Favourite Briton.

Born in Thaxted, Essex
Born in 1577
Died in 1626

Samuel Purchas was an English cleric who, thanks to his church being close to the then major port of Leigh-on-Sea, gathered innumerable stories and travel details from sailors there. As additional material he was left a large stock of manuscripts by the writer Richard Hakluyt. While the latter sought through his writings to inspire men to travel and exploration, Purchas aimed to educate, entertain and instruct morally those who read his works. His books are an important source of information about the age of exploration.
