Student at RADA. Made stage debut in Major Barbara (1928) in Huddersfield. First New York appearance as Ophelia in Hamlet (1931). Many theatrical successses included The Three Sisters (1951) and Hay Fever (1965). Rare screen appearances included In Which We Serve (1942) and This Happy Breed (1944). Won a British Film Award for The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie.
