BOOK HAMMERSMITH HOTELS

Eric Newby
- Favourite Briton.

Born in Hammersmith, London
Born on 6th of December 1919
Died in Guildford, Surrey
Died on 20th of October 2006

Eric Newby’s life was a strange amalgam of ‘real’ jobs in advertising and ladies fashion, distinguished service in the SBS during WWII, and travel – as a genuine adventurer (apprentice aboard a Finnish sailing bark in 1938) and a writer of travel books and for some time as travel editor at The Observer. His A Short Walk in the Hindu Kush is one of the classics of the genre, almost innocent rather than macho, and a superb read.

Brit Quote:
The dictum that truth always triumphs over persecution is one of the pleasant falsehoods which men repeat after one another till they pass into commonplaces, but which all experience refutes. - John Stuart Mill
