BOOK ALRESFORD HOTELS

Mary Mitford
- Favourite Briton.

Born in Alresford, Hampshire
Born on 16th of December 1787
Died on 10th of January 1855

Mary Mitford had the incredible fortune of winning a lottery prize of £20000 when she was aged ten; and the great misfortune of having a father who spent that, having already wasted a large legacy left by his mother. To support her spendthrift father she wrote poetry, plays and most significantly prose works, her five volumes of sketches of rural life Our Village, published between 1824 and 1832, gaining her a large following and considerable (if briefly held) financial reward.
