Born into an artistic family, and spending her childhood more in Italy (along with France and Switzerland) than England, she was cultured and interested in ideas, writing the poetry for which she is now chiefly remembered. Marriage to an editor of magazines and periodicals saw her involved in such work; she also supported the suffragette cause, and was an anti-imperialist.
