Born 1920 - English detective and story writer.


Eldest child of Inland Revenue official. Worked in theatre and during war as a Red Cross Nurse. Later worked in Home Office, involved with forensic science service. First novel Cover Her Face published in 1962. Many works feature the detective, Adam Dalgleish. Awarded the Crime Writers Association Diamond Dagger in 1987. Made a life peer in 1991.
