Lofting, though born in Maidenhead and schooled in Derbyshire, spent the majority of his life in the USA. He studied at MIT, and worked as a civil engineer before joining the Irish Guards in WWI. It was in the trenches that his most famous creation, the character Doctor Doolittle, began to form in his mind and letters, Lofting concerned at the fate of horses in the conflict. The series ran to 12 books, the first appearing in 1920. All were also illustrated by the author.
