Educated at Emmanuel College, Cambridge. Proposed the now discredited steady state theory of the universe. Also suggested that currently accepted theory of the build-up to supernovae. Books include Nature of the Universe (1952) and Frontiers of Astronomy (1955). Wrote stories for children and autobiography.
