After his education at Berkhamsted Boys School Robin Knox-Johnson served in the Merchant Navy and Royal Naval Reserve from 1957 to 1965, when his second maritime career as a long-distance yachtsman began. In 1968 he became the first person to sail around the globe non-stop single handed. Since that time he has been involved in his sport as a competitor in many major races, and as a patron and organiser, for example as President of the Sail Training Association and as originator of the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race. He was knighted in 1995.
