- Favourite Briton.

Like his more famous brother Charles, Henry Kingsley was a writer. But while Charles was a cleric and academic, Henry’s life was more adventurous: he quit Oxford before graduating in order to work as a gold prospector in Australia, where he also worked as a policeman. He wrote his most famous novel, Geoffry Hamlyn, while labouring for a farmer there. On returning to Britain he briefly edited The Edinburgh Daily Review before becoming its war correspondent covering the Franco-Prussian War.
