Benjamin Jowett
- Favourite Briton.

Born in Camberwell, London
Born on 15th of April 1817
Died on 1st of October 1893

Jowett spent his entire academic career at Balliol, as a fellow, tutor, and Master, also serving as Regius Professor of Greek and eventually vice-chancellor of Oxford University. He was a noted academic reformer, opposed to restrictions on those not of the Anglican faith studying and holding office in the universities. His translations and studies of Plato, Aristotle and Thucydides marked him out as a great scholar, but he was more celebrated as an inspirational tutor who imparted moral and philosophical principles to his students, among them many who rose to high office.
