Studied physiology at Trinity College, Cambridge. A pacifist during WWI he was imprisoned as a conscientious objector in 1916. Held academic posts in England, Scotland, Canada and South Africa. Wrote a number of popular books on science including Mathematics for the Million (1936) and Science for the Citizen (1938). Created an international language, Interglossa.
