Born 1790. Died 1857 - Physician and physiologist.

Studied medicine at Edinburgh University. Practised medicine in Nottingham and London. Wrote on many medical subjects including respiration and the circulation of the blood. Developed a technique for resuscitating the drowned. Provided the foundation for the theory of the neural arc.
