Born 1856. Died 1928 - Philosopher and Liberal politician.

Educated at Edinburgh University. Called to the Bar in 1879. Became a Liberal MP for Haddingtonshire in 1895. Was Secretary of State for War (1905-12) when he founded the Territorial Army and remodelled the army. Became Viscount Haldane in 1911. Helped to found the London School of Economics.
