Won a scholarship to Sadler’s Wells Ballet School at the age of nine. Was prima ballerina at Sadler’s Wells (1942-57). First English ballerina to appear with Bolshoi Ballet in Russia. Was artistic director of London Festival Ballet (1968-79). Created DBE in 1988.
