Born 1864. Died 1932 - Geologist and explorer.

Accompanied the first British East African Expedition in 1892-93. Made subsequent explorations to the Middle East, Tibet and the Americas. Wrote hundreds of geological papers on a variety of subjects including corals, tectonics and the origin of the oceans. Killed in the gorge of the River Urubamba in the Peruvian Andes.
