Only child of William Herschel. Educated at St John’s College, Cambridge. Won Copley Prize for mathematical research. Listed nebulae, clusters and double stars in northern and southern skies. Interested in chemistry. Pioneer photographer. Made baronet at coronation of Queen Victoria.
