Born 1845. Died 1935 - Linguist and scholar.

Had a career in the diplomatic service in China (1867-92). Returned to Great Britain and was Professor of Chinese at Cambridge (1897-1932). Published a number of works including Chinese Biographical Dictionary (1898) and A History of Chinese Literature (1901,1923).
