Self-taught artist. Joined the Reynolds News in 1938 to draw weekly cartoons and the strip, Young Ernie. Moved to the Daily Express and Sunday Express where he developed his Giles family cartoons, the most famous character being the matriarch of the family, known simply as Grandma.
