Born 1741 - Zurich, Switzerland. Died 1825 - Painter and art critic.

Studied theology in Switzerland. Moved to England in 1764. Became Professor of Painting at the Royal Academy in 1799. Best known for his paintings of Shakespeare’s and Milton’s works. Buried in the crypt of St Paul’s Cathedral.
