An English soldier and political leader best known for his role as Lord Protector of England, Scotland and Ireland. He first sat in the House of Commons in 1628 and took an immediate dislike to Charles I. He was instrumental in making England into a republican Commonwealth, and his signature was among those on the death warrant of Charles I (1649).
