Became Labour MP for Plympton Sutton in 1966 Held post of Foreign Secretary from 1977 to 1979. Resigned from Labour party in 1981. One of the founders of the Social Democratic Party. Led the SDP from 1983 to 1987 and the reformed SDP from 1988 to 1990.
