Educated at Quaker boarding school and Newnham College, Cambridge. Earlier novels include A Summer Bird Cage (1963), The Millstone (1965) and The Ice Age (1977). Written biographies of Arnold Bennett and Angus Wilson. Later works included The Witch of Exmoor (1996) and The Peppered Moth (2001).
