Made professional debut in Chekhovís The Seagull in 1960. Major roles include The Dresser (1980) and Andy Capp (1981). First film appearance was The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner (1962). Others include King Rat (1965) and Dr Zhivago (1965). Knighted in 2001.
