Born 1609. Died 1674 - English statesman.


Chief advisor to Charles II while in exile and on the Restoration was created Earl of Clarendon. Introduced the Clarendon Code to ensure the supremacy of the Church of England. Criticism of Charles’s private life force him into exile in Rouen where he died. Buried in Westminster Abbey.
