Married at age of 17. Ordained as priest in 1756. Became well known with Rosciad (1761) and The Apology (1761), an attack on his critics. Ridiculed Dr Johnson in The Ghost (1762). Other satires included The Prophecy of Famine and The Epistle to Hogarth. Died suddenly on a visit to France.
