Educated at Portsmouth Northern Secondary School. Elected Labour MP for South Cardiff in 1945. Chancellor of Exchequer under Harold Wilson introducing controversial taxation measures. Elected Prime Minister on Wilson’s resignation in 1976. After Conservative success in 1979, resigned as Leader of Opposition in 1980. Made life peer in 1987.
