Born 1835. Died 1902 - English author, painter and musician.


Educated at St Johnís College, Cambridge. Greatly influenced by Darwinís doctrine, opposed to natural selection. Wrote Erewhon (1872) and Erewhon Revisited (1901). Studied painting and loved music. Published translations and wrote literary criticism. Autobiographical novel published posthumously.
