Joined army at 16. Promoted to Major-general in 1813. Governor of New South Wales from 1821 to 1825 improving system of land grants and reforming the currency. Set up observatory in Paramatta in 1822. Catalogued 7,385 stars in Australia and received Copley Medal. Capital of Queensland is named after him.
