Studied at RADA. Stage work included roles in plays by Shakespeare, Chekhov and Stoppard. Films include Hamlet (1996) and Unconditional Love (2000). Well known for roles in television sitcoms The Good Life, Ever Decreasing Circles and Monarch of the Glen. Awarded OBE in 1989.
