Had knowledge of 200 languages. Became first editor of radical Westminster Review. Prepared government reports on commerce of Switzerland, Italy, Egypt, Syria and Germany. Knighted in 1854 and made Governor of Hong Kong. Signed commercial treaty with Siam Published his autobiography in 1877.
