Raised in an orphanage. Started local paper The Hackney Hansard in 1844. Founded the weekly John Bull (1906) and became MP for South Hackney (1906-1912). Charged with fraud on numerous occasions, had bankruptcy petitions and writs filed against him. Imprisoned in 1922. Died in poverty.
