Born 1599. Died 1657 - English naval commander.


Considered one of the greatest English admirals. Became MP in 1640 later serving in the Long Parliament (1645-53). Appointed admiral in 1649, blockaded Lisbon, captured Scilly Isles and Jersey. Defeated the Dutch. Greatest victory was in 1657 when he destroyed a Spanish treasure fleet off Tenerife.
