A socialist millionaire and one of Britain’s first television barons, he was a successful business man from the start, acquiring control of 30 cinemas by the late 1930s as well as becoming chairman of the Granada Group. He set up Granada Television in 1956 eventually becoming its president (1979-93). He chose Manchester as the company’s base due to the high rainfall – thinking that would keep people indoors watching more television !
