He was a pupil of Nadia Boulanger, and her influence shows in his earlier works such as the oratorio Jonah (1935). He achieved wide recognition for his later works Stabat Mater (1946), operas Nelson (1953) and Ruth (1956), and the orchestral Windsor Variations (1969). He was knighted in 1974.
