He graduated as Senior Wrangler and first Smith’s Prizeman (1843) at St John’s College, Cambridge, and was elected to a fellowship there. His most important achievement was predicting the exisitence and position of Neptune. The Adams Prize, presented by the University of Cambridge commemorates this achievement.
